A chord wheel, also known as a circle of fifths, is a tool used in music theory to help musicians understand the relationships between chordes, keys, and scales.
Adjacent sections on the wheel represent keys that are a perfect fifth apart. Moving clockwise around the wheel, each section represents a key that is a perfect fifth higher than the previous one. Conversely, moving counterclockwise represents keys that are a perfect fourth apart.
The chord wheel helps musicians determine chord progressions by showing which chords are likely to sound harmonious together based on their proximity on the wheel. For example, chords located close together on the wheel are likely to sound good when played in succession.
Musicians can also use the chord wheel to transpose songs into different keys. By rotating the wheel to align the desired key with the original key, they can determine the chords needed for the transposed version.
